What “brauchen” means: two different patterns

brauchen + accusative object = “to need something” (a thing)
(nicht) brauchen + zu + infinitive = “(not) need to do something” (an action)

How to choose: “need” (thing) vs “need to” (action)

Ask yourself: Is it a noun? → use brauchen + Akkusativ.
Ask yourself: Is it a verb/action? → use (nicht) brauchen + zu + infinitive.

Thing: Wir brauchen noch Milch. (milk = noun)

Action: Wir brauchen die Milch nicht zu kaufen. (kaufen = verb)

Word order: where “zu + infinitive” goes

brauchen is conjugated and sits in position 2.
zu + infinitive goes to the end of the clause.

Example: Du brauchst die Zwiebeln nicht zu schneiden.

With extra info: Wir brauchen den Salat heute nicht zu würzen, weil der Käse sehr salzig ist.

The key B1 point: “brauchen” is most natural with negation

In everyday German, brauchen + zu + infinitive is used mainly with a negative idea:
nicht, kein-, nie, kaum (hardly), nur (only), nicht unbedingt (not necessarily)

Common trap: “brauchen” without negation often sounds wrong

If it is clearly necessary, German usually prefers müssen.
brauchen + zu + infinitive without negation is possible, but sounds more formal/marked.

Natural: Du musst die Nudeln kochen.

~~Du brauchst die Nudeln zu kochen.~~ (often avoided in normal conversation)

But: If you mean “need” as in “require” (a thing), use the noun pattern:

Natural: Wir brauchen einen großen Topf.

Without negation, you usually use müssen instead of brauchen.
