What this structure expresses (Konjunktiv II with wenn + würde)

Use this to talk about a hypothetical or unlikely situation in the present/future.

Meaning: “If … (but in reality not), then I would …”
Typical contexts: negotiations, polite proposals, planning, problem-solving at work.
Not used for real/likely conditions: then you normally use wenn + present (Indicative).

Word order: where the verbs go

Wenn-clause: the conjugated verb goes to the end.

Main clause with würde: würde is the conjugated verb in position 2; the infinitive goes to the end.

You can start with either clause. If you start with wenn, use a comma and then the main clause starts right after it.

Two correct sentence patterns (choose what fits your style)

What to pay attention to: the most common mistakes

Don’t use present tense in the condition if it is unreal/unlikely.

Keep “would” out of the wenn-clause (in standard German).

At B1, you mainly need a few high-frequency forms. Learn them as “chunks”.

Self-check: can you build the sentence reliably?

Decide: Is it unreal/unlikely? If yes → Konjunktiv II + würde.
Write the wenn-clause: wenn + (subject…) + … + Konjunktiv II at the end.
Add the main clause: würde in position 2 + … + infinitive at the end.
Swap option: If you start with the main clause, the grammar stays the same.

The condition is always in the Konjunktiv II; the main clause uses würde.
