In the emergency department, many patients are treated every day. Call the emergency number if severe chest pain, shortness of breath, heavy bleeding, or loss of consciousness occurs. In the case of an allergic reaction with swelling in the face or persistent dizziness, you should also get help immediately. Minor wounds or mild burns are usually treated by your family doctor or the out-of-hours medical service.

If possible, bring your health insurance card and a list of your medications. The team asks about allergies and pre-existing conditions and creates a medical record. In the case of injuries such as a deep cut, the wound is examined and treated; sometimes an injection against tetanus is necessary. Anyone who falls and has severe pain in the leg should not put weight on the leg and should ensure safe transport.

(Yesterday I was out on my bicycle and I fell on a wet patch. I scraped my knee, the wound bled, and I felt dizzy for a moment. Hallo Nina, hier ist Jana aus dem 3. Stock.

Hi Nina, this is Jana from the 3rd floor.

I heard noise in the stairwell earlier and later saw that you had a bandage on your hand. Did something happen? Did you cut yourself or fall? If you feel dizzy or it hurts a lot, I can drive with you to the ER or dial the emergency number. Please write me briefly how you are and whether you need help.

Useful phrases:

  1. Danke dir für deine Hilfe, aber ...

(Thanks for your help, but ...)

  2. Ich war in der Notaufnahme, weil ...

(I was in the ER because ...)

  3. Kannst du bitte kurz nach mir sehen / mich kurz begleiten?

(Could you please check on me briefly / accompany me for a moment?)

Hi Jana, thanks for your message and the offer. I cut myself in the kitchen on a can. The wound wasn’t very deep, but it bled a lot. I’m not dizzy and otherwise I’m fine. I cleaned the wound and put a bandage on it. If it gets infected or worse, I’ll go to the ER. Could you still ring my doorbell briefly at 8 p.m., in case I need help changing the dressing?
