When to use wenn, als, bis, seit

• wenn = present / future, or something that happens repeatedly (a “whenever” idea).
• als = a one-time situation in the past (not repeated).
• bis = “until” → focus on the end point when something becomes true/finished.
• seit / seitdem = “since” → from a starting point in the past up to now (still relevant/ongoing).

The key grammar point: verb position in the subordinate clause

These are subordinating conjunctions (Subjunktionen). That means:

• The conjugated verb goes to the end of the subordinate clause.
• The subordinate clause can come first or second.

Decision shortcut: ask one question

1. Past, one-time? → use als.
2. Present/future OR repeated? → use wenn.
3. “Up to the moment X happens/finishes”? → use bis.
4. “From then until now”? → use seit / seitdem.

Common confusion 1: wenn vs als

• Future: Wenn die Reinigungskraft morgen kommt, zeige ich ihr den Staubsaugerroboter.
• One-time past: Als die Reinigungskraft gestern kam, habe ich ihr den Staubsaugerroboter gezeigt.
• Repeated past: Wenn die Reinigungskraft früher kam, hat sie immer Musik gehört.

Common confusion 2: bis vs seit

• bis looks forward to an end point (then something changes).
• seit looks back to a start point and means “from then until now”.

Self-check: is your sentence correct?

1. Time logic: Is it future/present/repeated → wenn? One-time past → als?
2. Time span vs end point: Ongoing from past → seit? Waiting up to a moment → bis?
3. Verb at the end: Does the conjugated verb come last in the subordinate clause?
4. If the subordinate clause comes first: Is the main clause verb in position 1 right after the comma?
