Polite questions: könnten, würden

What this grammar does (Konjunktiv II for polite requests)

In meetings, German often uses Konjunktiv II to sound more professional and less pushy.

• Könnten Sie …? = polite “Could you …?” (focus: ability/possibility)
• Würden Sie …? = polite “Would you …?” (focus: willingness/decision)

Key idea: Konjunktiv II creates distance → it sounds softer than the present tense.

The 2 main patterns you need

Word order: the one thing to watch in questions

• In a question, the verb comes first.
• The main action stays in the infinitive and goes to the end.

Choosing between “Könnten” and “Würden” (quick decision)

• Use Könnten Sie …? when you ask someone to do something (support, explain, send).
• Use Würden Sie …? when you ask someone to voluntarily contribute (make a suggestion, take a look, review).

Both are polite. If you are unsure, Könnten Sie …? is the safe default in business contexts.

How to turn a direct request into a polite one (step by step)

1. Start with Könnten/Würden.
2. Add Sie.
3. Keep your main verb in the infinitive and move it to the end.
4. Add softeners if appropriate: bitte, kurz, noch einmal, bis morgen.

Self-check (before you speak)

• Verb first? Könnten/Würden at position 1?
• Sie directly after it?
• Main verb in infinitive at the end? (machen/erklären/schicken …)
• Tone: add bitte if the request could sound demanding.
