Final clauses I: ohne...zu and ohne dass

Get your book

Final clauses describe an action that takes place because another action happens. Examples: ohne...zu, ohne dass, anstatt...zu.

What these structures do (one idea: “not doing X” or “doing Y instead”)

  • ohne … zu = the main action happens and another action does not happen (same subject).
  • ohne dass = the main action happens and a whole second clause is negated (often different subject).
  • anstatt … zu = you do Y instead of doing X (same subject).

Good to know: These are typical for formal written and spoken German (emails, reports, meetings).

Quick choice: “zu + infinitive” or “dass-clause”?

Use … zu Use … dass
  • Same subject in both actions
  • Short, compact style
  • Verb is an infinitive at the end
  • Different subject (very common reason)
  • You need a full clause
  • Conjugated verb at the end

Word order you should “see” immediately

  • ohne … zu: ohne + (object etc.) + zu + Infinitiv (end)

Ich habe den Antrag abgeschickt, ohne vorher meine Mutter zu fragen.

  • ohne dass: ohne dass + subject + … + verb (end)

Ich habe den Antrag abgeschickt, ohne dass meine Mutter davon wusste.

  • anstatt … zu: anstatt + (object etc.) + zu + Infinitiv (end)

Er hat Unterstützung beantragt, anstatt sich auszuruhen.

The most common decision point: same subject vs. different subject

  1. Step 1: Identify the subject of the main clause.

    Ich habe Pflegegeld beantragt …

  2. Step 2: Ask: “Who does the missing/alternative action?”

If it is also ich → choose ohne … zu / anstatt … zu.

  3. Step 3: If it is a different person/thing → choose ohne dass.

… ohne dass die Sachbearbeiterin eine Begründung geschickt hat.

Time logic: why you often see “had + participle” (Plusquamperfekt)

  • Very often, the “missing” action happened before the main action (or should have happened before).

Der Pflegedienst kam, ohne dass wir ihn bestellt hatten. (order before arrival)

  • If both actions are at the same time, normal past tense is fine.

Er ging nach Hause, ohne dass er sich verabschiedete.

Typical mistakes (and how to fix them fast)

  • Mistake 1: Mixing the patterns

ohne dass meine Mutter zu fragen

Fix: Either full clause or infinitive clause:

    • ohne meine Mutter zu fragen. (same subject)
    • ohne dass ich meine Mutter gefragt habe. (full clause)
  • Mistake 2: Forgetting the verb-at-the-end in the dass-clause

ohne dass wir ihn bestellt haben (often sounds off if ordering happened earlier)

Fix: Put the conjugated verb at the end and match the time logic:

… ohne dass wir ihn bestellt hatten.

  • Mistake 3: Using anstatt but still describing “not doing” (no real alternative)

Check: With anstatt, you must clearly show the alternative action.

Ich habe gearbeitet, anstatt mich auszuruhen. (work = alternative)

Self-check before you write (10 seconds)

  1. Do I mean without doing X (ohne) or instead of doing X (anstatt)?

  2. Is the subject the same? → … zu

  3. Do I need a full clause / different subject? → ohne dass

  4. Did the “missing” action happen earlier? → consider Plusquamperfekt (… hatte / … hatten).

  1. ohne...zu: expresses an action that happens at the same time without the main clause happening.
  2. ohne dass: expresses that an action in the subordinate clause happens without the main clause happening.
  3. anstatt...zu: describes an action that takes place instead of another one.
Konjunktion (Conjunction)Beispiele (Examples)
ohne...zu (without...to)Max ging ohne zu fragen, nach Hause. (Max went home without asking.)
ohne dass (without (the fact that))Max ging nach Hause, ohne dass er gefragt hatte. (Max went home without having asked.)
anstatt...zu (instead of...to)Sie fing an ihn zu pflegen, anstatt zu schlafen. (She started taking care of him, instead of sleeping.)
anstatt...zu (instead of...to)Er bentragte die Unterstützung, anstatt sich auszuruhen. (He applied for support, instead of resting.)

Exceptions!

  1. Use ohne...zu to express an action without the main clause.
  2. With anstatt...zu you express that something is done instead of another action.
  3. Pay attention that ohne dass has a complete subordinate-clause structure.

Exercise 3: Multiple Choice

Instruction: Choose the correct form with “without ... to” or “without that”.

Fetching your corrections... Please don't close this page yet.

1.
Incorrect: Stylistically and in terms of time, the past perfect is better here (order < come). In addition, in the context of the preceding event, “had ordered” sounds more natural.
2.
Incorrect: After “without that” there must be a complete subordinate clause with a conjugated verb (e.g., “without me asking my mother”); here the form with the infinitive is misplaced.
