What these phrases do (your goal in a discussion)

Ein Vorteil ist, dass … / Ein Nachteil ist, dass … = introduce one clear pro or con.
Einerseits …, andererseits … = show a balanced comparison (two sides).
Es spricht viel dafür, dass … = “there are strong indications that …” (reasoned opinion).
Aus diesem Grund / Deshalb / Daher = draw a consequence (“as a result”).
Insgesamt lässt sich sagen, dass … = conclude/summarize professionally.

Key point: Some of these are followed by a dass-clause (subordinate clause). Others start a new main clause and trigger verb-second word order.

Pattern 1: “Ein Vorteil/Nachteil ist, dass …” (dass-clause = verb at the end)

Use this when you want to name a pro or con in a structured way.

Do not replace dass with weil here.

Wrong: ~~Ein Nachteil ist, weil …~~

Pattern 2: “Einerseits …, andererseits …” (two main clauses, verb in position 2)

Both parts are typically main clauses. After andererseits, you still need normal main-clause word order: verb in position 2.

Self-check: After andererseits, ask: “What is my verb?” Put it right after the first element.

Pattern 3: “Es spricht viel dafür, dass …” (careful, professional opinion)

This is great for meetings, reports, and discussions when you want to sound evidence-based.

Structure: Es spricht viel dafür, dass + subordinate clause
Word order: verb at the end in the dass-clause

Example: Es spricht viel dafür, dass der Online-Shop bald noch wichtiger wird.

Optional add-on for clarity: You can add a reason after that.

Es spricht viel dafür, dass der Online-Shop wichtiger wird, weil viele Kundinnen und Kunden online bestellen.

Pattern 4: “Aus diesem Grund / Deshalb / Daher” (consequence = verb-second)

These usually start a new main clause. When they come first, the verb must come right after them.

Pattern 5: “Insgesamt lässt sich sagen, dass …” (a formal conclusion)

Use this to summarize neutrally (good for presentations and written conclusions).

Structure: Insgesamt lässt sich sagen, dass + subordinate clause
Word order in the dass-clause: verb at the end

Example: Insgesamt lässt sich sagen, dass das Projekt erfolgreich war.

Quick decision guide (choose the right structure)

Do I want to introduce a pro/con? → Ein Vorteil/Nachteil ist, dass …
Do I want to show both sides? → Einerseits …, andererseits …
Do I want to express an evidence-based opinion? → Es spricht viel dafür, dass …
Do I want to express a result? → Deshalb / Daher / Aus diesem Grund + verb-second

Final self-check (30 seconds)

If you use dass → the verb goes to the end of that clause.
If you start with Deshalb/Daher/Aus diesem Grund → the verb comes immediately after it.
After andererseits → keep normal main clause order: andererseits + verb (not “andererseits + subject + verb”).
