Introduction to Negotiation at a Conference

This lesson focuses on negotiating effectively in a professional setting such as a conference. It is designed for German learners at the B1 level, helping you build practical vocabulary and expressions used in formal and semi-formal negotiations.

Key Topics Covered

  • Essential Vocabulary: Terms related to discussing proposals, agreeing, disagreeing, and making suggestions.
  • Common Phrases: Typical sentences used during negotiation exchanges.
  • Grammar Focus: Modal verbs to express politeness and possibility, and phrases for expressing conditions and compromises.

Examples of Useful Vocabulary and Expressions

  • Vorschlag machen – to make a proposal
  • zustimmen – to agree
  • ablehnen – to reject
  • Könnten wir eventuell…? – Could we possibly…?
  • Wie wäre es mit…? – How about…?
  • Ich bin damit einverstanden. – I agree with that.
  • Vielleicht sollten wir berücksichtigen… – Maybe we should consider…

Important Note on Language Differences

Unlike English, German often uses modal verbs placed at the end of subordinate clauses, which affects sentence structure during negotiations. Politeness is frequently reinforced through modal verbs like könnten (could) and indirect question forms.
For example, the English phrase "Could we possibly agree on this point?" translates to "Könnten wir uns vielleicht auf diesen Punkt einigen?" where the verb einigen comes at the end. Learning to structure these sentences correctly will improve your negotiation skills significantly.
