Use this structure when the situation is not real (yet) or is unlikely, and you are imagining a plan, strategy, or wish.

  • Wenn-Satz = the condition (“if …”).
  • Hauptsatz = the consequence (“… would …”).

Step-by-step: build the sentence reliably

  1. Step 1: Start with wenn.

  2. Step 2: Add the subject + the verb in Konjunktiv II.

    • Common forms: hätte, wäre, könnte

  3. Step 3: Put the conjugated verb at the end of the wenn-clause.

    Wenn ich hätte mehr Zeit… → Wenn ich mehr Zeit hätte…

  4. Step 4: In the main clause use würde + infinitive at the end.

Two places where German “pushes” verbs to the end:

Konjunktiv II vs. würde: what goes where?

For B1, a safe default is:

  • Wenn-clause: use Konjunktiv II (hätte/wäre/könnte or a würde-form).
  • Main clause: use würde + infinitive.

Both orders are correct. The meaning stays the same.
