Prepositions binnen, rond, tegen, vanuit

Voorzetsels binnen, rond, tegen, vanuit

Voorzetsels voor plaats en richting zoals binnen, rond, tegen, vanuit en via.

(Prepositions for place and direction such as binnen, rond, tegen, vanuit and via.)

What these prepositions do (place + direction)

These words help you answer two practical questions:

  • Where is it? (location)
  • From where / by which route? (direction, starting point, route)

Quick meaning map (English → Dutch)

Dutch Core meaning Typical use
binnen inside you are in a building/area
rond around (moving) you move around something
rondom around (all around) things are located around something
tegen against touching a surface
vanuit from (starting point) start of movement / view / communication
via via route with an intermediate stop

Binnen: “inside” (common placement)

  • Use binnen when you are inside a building or an enclosed place.
  • Very common pattern: binnen in + place.
  • Ik ben binnen in het winkelcentrum. (I’m inside the shopping centre.)
  • We wachten binnen in de hal. (We wait inside in the hall/lobby.)

Watch out:

  • Ik wacht binnen het winkelcentrum naar de bakker. → You don’t use naar to say where you are waiting.
  • Better: Ik wacht binnen in het winkelcentrum bij de bakker.

Rond vs rondom: movement vs position

Same idea (“around”), different focus:

  • rond = you move around something.
  • rondom = things are situated around something (often multiple things).
Meaning Better choice Example
Walking/driving in a circle rond We lopen rond het winkelcentrum.
Many places around one centre rondom Er zijn veel cafés rondom het station.

Self-check:

  • Can you add “we are walking” naturally? → choose rond.
  • Are you describing a “spread of locations”? → choose rondom.

Tegen: “against” = contact

Tegen is physical: something touches something else.

  • Hij staat tegen de muur. (He is standing against the wall.)
  • De ladder staat tegen het gebouw. (The ladder is against the building.)

Typical confusion:

  • tegen de muur = leaning/touching
  • aan de muur = attached (hung, fixed)
  • De poster hangt aan de muur. (attached)
  • De fiets staat tegen de muur. (touching/leaning)

Vanuit: the starting point (one word)

Use vanuit when you name the starting point of movement, a route, or a perspective.

  • Ik kom vanuit het station. (I’m coming from the station.)
  • Vanuit mijn kantoor zie ik het park. (From my office I can see the park.)
  • Ik stuur het document vanuit huis. (I’m sending it from home.)

Spelling trap:

  • van uit is incorrect here → write vanuit as one word.

Via: a route with a stop in the middle

Via tells you the route is not direct.

  • We reizen via Amsterdam naar Parijs.
  • Ik stuur het bestand via Teams. (route/channel)

Self-check:

  • Can you ask “which way?” or “through what?” → via fits.

Mini decision guide (choose fast)

  1. Inside a building? → binnen (in)
  2. Moving around? → rond
  3. Located all around? → rondom
  4. Touching/leaning? → tegen
  5. Starting point? → vanuit
  6. Intermediate stop/route/channel? → via

If you can answer the right question (inside? around? touching? from where? via what?), the preposition usually becomes obvious.

  1. These prepositions express a place or direction.
