Expressing agreement and disagreement

Meaning & when to use each phrase

• Ik ben het eens met … = I agree with … (your opinion / statement).
• Ik ga akkoord met … = I agree to … / I approve … (a plan / proposal / decision).
• Ik denk (niet) dat … = I (don’t) think that … (your assessment).
• Dat klopt (niet)! = That’s (not) correct/true! (fact check).
• Het is (niet) waar dat … = It is (not) true that … (stronger, more formal).
• Ik ben (niet) zeker dat … = I’m (not) sure that … (uncertainty).
• Akkoord! = Agreed! (short, practical, often at the end).
• Dat betwijfel ik! = I doubt it! (short, clear disagreement).

Two key patterns: “met” vs “dat”

Fixed expression: Ik ben het eens met …

• This is a set phrase. You must include het.
• Correct: Ik ben het eens met deze aanpak.
• Wrong: Ik ben eens met deze aanpak.
• Wrong preposition: Ik ben het eens op … → always met.

“Akkoord” is also fixed: (niet) akkoord met

• Correct: Ik ga akkoord met het voorstel.
• Correct: Ik ga niet akkoord met deze beslissing.
• Common mistake: Ik ben akkoord met … (not standard in Dutch).

Negation: where to put niet

• With agreement phrases, niet goes directly after the verb:
  • Ik ben het niet eens met jouw conclusie.
  • Ik ga niet akkoord met deze planning.
• With Ik denk … dat, the Dutch pattern is:
  • Ik denk niet dat … (you negate the thinking)
  • Not: Ik denk dat … niet (possible, but different focus; A2: prefer Ik denk niet dat.)

Word order in the dat-clause (subordinate clause)

• After dat, the verb usually goes to the end of the clause.

Choosing the right level of “strength”

• Dat klopt (niet)! = direct and factual (minutes, schedules, numbers).
• Ik denk (niet) dat … = softer, opinion-based (polite in meetings).
• Dat betwijfel ik! = strong doubt; often add a reason after it.
• Het is (niet) waar dat … = formal / firm (careful: can sound confrontational).

Mini self-check (before you speak)

1. Am I reacting to a person/idea? → use … met (eens/akkoord).
2. Am I reacting to a statement? → use Dat klopt (niet) or … dat.
3. Am I negating? → place niet early: ik denk niet dat, ik ga niet akkoord met.
4. Did I use the fixed form? → Ik ben het eens met (don’t drop het).
