Indefinite numerals (veel, weinig, wat, ... )

Onbepaalde telwoorden geven een onduidelijke hoeveelheid aan.

(Indefinite quantifiers indicate an unclear/unspecified amount.)

What are onbepaalde telwoorden?

They express an unclear amount: not a precise number like drie (three).

  • veel = a lot / many
  • weinig = little / few
  • wat = some / a bit of
  • enige = some (formal, limited group)
  • sommige = some (not all)
  • een paar = a few / a couple of
  • genoeg = enough
  • geen = no / none

One key question: do you place it before a noun?

The ending depends mainly on position.

  • Before a noun (attributive): sometimes add -e.
  • Without a noun (used on its own): sometimes add -n (only for people, plural).

Rule 1: Some words get -e before a noun

These commonly take -e when they directly describe a noun:

Base form Before a noun Example
enige enige + noun (often written as enige, but in many course contexts: enige behaves like an adjective and can appear as enige before a noun)

Enige collega’s werken vandaag thuis.
sommige sommige + noun

Sommige mensen houden niet van open kantoren.

Tip: In this topic, focus on what your book tests: sommige/enige before a noun, and the special -n form when used alone for people.

Exceptions: these do not get -e

These stay the same before a noun:

  • veel:

    Er zijn veel toeristen in de trein.

  • weinig:

    Er zijn weinig winkels open op zondag.

  • wat:

    Wil je wat water?

  • een paar:

    Ik heb een paar vragen.

  • genoeg:

    We hebben genoeg tijd.

  • geen:

    Er is geen koffie meer.

So you write: veel schapen, weinig koeien, genoeg water (not vele, weinige, genoeg(e) in this meaning).

Rule 2: -n when the word stands alone for people (plural)

When you mean some people and you do not say the noun mensen, you often use a plural form with -n:

Enige collega’s zijn ziek.

Enigen zijn ziek.

 Some (a limited number of people)
  • Correct: Sommigen vinden het platteland te stil.
  • Not in this meaning: Sommige vinden het platteland te stil. (sounds unfinished: “some …” what?)

Quick self-check (before you answer)

  1. Am I naming the noun?
    • Yes → use the form before a noun: sommige mensen, enige collega’s, veel tijd.
    • No → is it people, plural? Then: sommigen/enigen.
  2. Is it one of the “no -e” words?
    • veel, weinig, wat, een paar, genoeg → keep it unchanged.
  3. Negative?
    • Use geen before a noun: geen koffie, geen tijd, geen collega’s.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Er zijn weinige koeien. → Er zijn weinig koeien.

  • Wil je watte melk? → Wil je wat melk?

  • We hebben genoegen water. → We hebben genoeg water.

  • Sommige vinden het leuk. → Sommigen vinden het leuk. (if you mean “some people”)

  1. Indefinite quantifiers indicate an unknown amount.
  2. Some indefinite quantifiers take an -e when they are placed before a noun.
  3. Enige and sommige take an -n when they are used on their own for people in the plural.

Exceptions!

  1. Een paar, wat, genoeg do not take -e at the end.
