We hebben een timmerman nodig voor ons huis, geen boekhouder. (We need a carpenter for our house, not an accountant.)
Wie een installateur nodig heeft, moet soms lang zoeken. (If you need an installer, you sometimes have to search for a long time.)
En zonder de buschauffeur komen we ook nergens. (And without the bus driver, we won't get anywhere either.)
Migratie zorgt voor extra vakmensen, maar vaak is dat niet voldoende. (Migration provides extra skilled tradespeople, but often that is not enough.)
We moeten de vakmensen weer meer waarderen, tenminste als we onze deur nog willen herstellen. (We need to appreciate skilled tradespeople more again, at least if we still want to repair our door.)

Neighborly chat about the shortage of skilled tradespeople
1. Geert: Mijn kraan lekt weer, maar ik kan geen loodgieter vinden. (My faucet is leaking again, but I can't find a plumber.)
2. Mieke: Ja, dat hoor ik vaak. Er is een groot tekort aan vakmensen. (Yes, I hear that often. There is a big shortage of skilled tradespeople.)
3. Geert: Dat klopt. Zelfs de elektricien had geen tijd voor kleine klusjes. (That's true. Even the electrician didn't have time for small jobs.)
4. Mieke: En de timmerman kwam bij mij pas na drie weken! (And the carpenter only came to me after three weeks!)
5. Geert: Dat is lang. Vroeger deden mensen zulke klusjes vaak zelf. (That's a long time. In the past, people often did those kinds of jobs themselves.)
6. Mieke: Ja, nu bellen we voor alles meteen een installateur of technicus. (Yes, now we call an installer or technician right away for everything.)
7. Geert: Onlangs zocht ik ook een stukadoor voor de muur. Dat kan ik niet zelf. (Recently I also looked for a plasterer for the wall. I can't do that myself.)
8. Mieke: Ik zou het zelf ook niet kunnen, maar soms doe ik wel iets zelf vanwege de lange wachttijd. (I wouldn't be able to do it myself either, but sometimes I do something myself because of the long waiting time.)
9. Geert: We hebben vakmensen nodig, meer dan we denken. (We need skilled tradespeople, more than we think.)
10. Mieke: Absoluut. Zonder hen krijgen we niet eens een deur gerepareerd. (Absolutely. Without them, we can't even get a door repaired.)
11. Geert: En wie bezorgt onze brieven? De communicatieadviseur? (And who delivers our letters? The communications adviser?)
