Time expressions with onvoltooid verleden tijd (gisteren, vorige week)

Uitdrukkingen zoals gisteren, vroeger, vorige week helpen het gebruik van de onvoltooid verleden tijd aan te duiden.

What you practise here

  • You use a past time expression (gisteren, vorige week, toen, vroeger…)
  • Then you normally use the verb in the simple past: OVT (werkte, ging, woonde…)

Core idea: past time signal = OVT

These words strongly anchor the sentence in the past. So Dutch typically chooses OVT (simple past), not present tense.

Word order: keep the verb in position 2

In a main clause, Dutch keeps the finite verb in position 2.

  • If you start with the time expression, the subject moves after the verb.
Pattern Example
Time + verb + subject + rest Gisteren werkte ik thuis.
Subject + verb + time + rest Ik werkte gisteren thuis.

“Toen” often creates a subordinate clause

Toen can be a simple time word, but very often it introduces a clause like “when…”.

  • In the toen-clause: the finite verb goes to the end.
  • After that clause, the main clause starts (and the verb is again in position 2).
Structure Correct Common mistake
Toen + … + verb (at the end) Toen ik klein was, wilde ik leraar worden. Toen ik was klein, wilde ik leraar worden.

“Op zondag” can mean a repeated habit in the past

Op zondag is neutral by itself. With a past context, it often means: “on Sundays (back then)”.

  • Past habit: Op zondag gingen we wandelen.
  • Nowadays habit (present context): Op zondag gaan we wandelen.

Quick self-check before you answer

  1. Did I use a past time expression? (gisteren, vorige week, een jaar geleden, vroeger…)
  2. Is my verb in OVT? (werkte, ging, woonde, studeerde…)
  3. Is the verb in position 2 in the main clause?
  4. If I used toen: did I put the verb at the end of the toen-clause?
