Time expressions with onvoltooid verleden tijd (gisteren, vorige week)

When do you use these time words?

• These time expressions point clearly to the past: gisteren, vorige week, vorige maand, vroeger, destijds, een jaar geleden.
• So the sentence typically uses the onvoltooid verleden tijd (OVT) = simple past.

Idea: the time word already tells you it’s past, so the verb should also be past.

The basic rule (what you should do every time)

1. Start with the time word (often it comes first, but it can also come later).
2. Put the verb in OVT.

Word order: where does the verb go?

• If the time expression is first, the verb comes in position 2.

Example: Gisteren werkte ik thuis. (verb = 2nd position)

• If the subject is first, the time expression can come later.

Example: Ik werkte gisteren thuis.

Same meaning, different emphasis.

“Toen” = then / when (often with a longer clause)

• Toen is used for a specific moment in the past: “then/at that time”.
• Very common pattern: Toen + clause.

Example: Toen ik klein was, wilde ik leraar worden.

• In the toen-clause you often see OVT too: was, had, ging, werkte.
