The imperative of pronominal verbs: "Lavez vous", "Rase-toi",...

L'impératif des verbes pronominaux : "Lavez vous", Rase-toi",...

L'impératif des verbes pronominaux est utilisé pour donner des ordres ou des instructions avec un pronom réfléchi. Exemple : 'Lève-toi', 'Habille-toi'.

(The imperative of pronominal verbs is used to give orders or instructions with a reflexive pronoun. Example: 'Lève-toi', 'Habille-toi'.)

What’s special about the imperative with reflexive verbs

With reflexive (pronominal) verbs, you give a command and you must place the reflexive pronoun correctly.

  • Reflexive verbs: se + verb (e.g., s’habiller, se raser, se dépêcher).
  • Imperative exists mainly in: tu, nous, vous.

Step 1 — Choose the imperative form (tu / nous / vous)

Use the same person you would use in real life:

  • Tu = informal, one person: Habille-toi.
  • Nous = “let’s …”: Habillons-nous.
  • Vous = formal or plural: Habillez-vous.

Step 2 — Put the reflexive pronoun in the right place

Form Position Pattern
Affirmative Pronoun goes after the verb Verb-pronoun
Negative Pronoun goes before the verb Ne + pronoun + verb + pas
  • Affirmative: Rase-toi doucement.
  • Negative: Ne te rase pas.

The key switch: te becomes toi (only in affirmative commands)

This is the detail learners often miss:

  • Affirmative + tu: tetoi
    • Lève-toi.
    • Habille-toi.
    • Rase-toi.
  • Negative: you keep the normal pronoun te
    • Ne te lève pas.
    • Ne t’ habille pas.

Hyphen checklist (common error)

  • Affirmative: hyphen is requiredAssieds-toi.
  • Negative: no hyphenNe te rassieds pas.

Quick self-check:

  • If you see ne … pas, the pronoun should be in front of the verb.
  • If it’s affirmative, the pronoun should be after the verb (with a hyphen).

Mini “debug” guide: fix typical wrong forms

  • Negative form (wrong → correct):
    • Ne rase-toi pas.Ne te rase pas.
    • Ne maquille-toi pas.Ne te maquille pas.
  • Affirmative form with tu (wrong → correct):
    • Habille-te.Habille-toi.
    • Assieds-te.Assieds-toi.

30-second self-test before you speak

  1. Is my sentence affirmative or negative?
  2. Did I choose the correct person: tu / nous / vous?
  3. Affirmative: did I use hyphen and (for tu) toi?
  4. Negative: did I use ne + pronoun + verb + pas?
  1. In the affirmative imperative form, reflexive pronouns are placed after the verb with a hyphen between them.
  2. In the negative imperative form, reflexive pronouns are placed before the verb without a hyphen between them. Place "ne" before the reflexive pronoun and "pas" after the verb.
  3. In the affirmative form, the reflexive pronoun "te" becomes "toi". Example: Lève-toi tout de suite !
PersonneS'habiller (forme affirmative) (To get dressed (affirmative form))S'habiller (forme négative) (To get dressed (negative form))
TuHabille-toi (Get dressed)Ne t'habille pas (Don’t get dressed)
NousHabillons-nous (Let’s get dressed)Ne nous habillons pas (Let’s not get dressed)
VousHabillez-vous  (Get dressed)Ne vous habillez pas (Don’t get dressed)
