What “ni…ni” really means (and why it’s different from “pas”)

Ni…ni is the French way to say “neither…nor” in a negative sentence.

ni replaces et (and) in a negative context.
With ni…ni, you usually do not add pas.

Pattern 1: “ne + verb + ni + X + ni + Y” (most common)

Use this when you simply exclude two options.
Articles are often omitted after ni, especially with general items.

Model: Je ne + verbe + ni + nom + ni + nom

Je ne veux ni café ni dessert.
Nous n’achetons ni imprimante ni scanner.

Tip: If you repeat an article, it’s also possible, but keep it consistent: ni un X ni un Y (more specific/contrastive).

Pattern 2: “ne + verb + pas + … ni …” (when the first element is already negated)

Use ne…pas…ni when you say “not X, nor Y”.

Model: Je ne + verbe + pas + de + nom + ni + de + nom

Je ne prends pas de table ni de chaise.
Il n’a pas de bureau ni de salle de réunion.

What to notice: after pas, French typically uses de (not des) for indefinite plural/uncountable items.

When “ni…ni” is the subject: word order changes

If the two items linked by ni…ni are the subject, the verb comes after them, and ne moves to the verb.

Model: Ni A ni B ne + verbe

Ni le tapis ni la table ne sont modernes.
Ni votre directeur ni votre collègue n’est disponible aujourd’hui. (often singular if seen as “neither one”)

Self-check: Ask yourself: “Is A/B doing the action?” If yes → it’s the subject → use Ni A ni B ne + verb.

Restriction: “ne…que” = “only” (not a real negative idea)

Ne…que means “only”. It’s a restriction, not “not”.

que goes directly before what is limited (the “only” element).
In spoken French, ne is often dropped, but for accurate B1 production, keep it: Je n’achète qu’un…

Quick decision guide (before you speak)

Do I mean neither…nor? → use ne…ni…ni.
Am I saying not X, nor Y (with a clear pas)? → use ne…pas…ni.
Do I mean only? → use ne…que.
Are the “ni…ni” elements the subject? → Ni A ni B ne + verb.

Final self-check: If you used ni…ni to exclude two things, remove pas (unless you are in the ne…pas…ni pattern).

"Ni" replaces "and" in a negative sentence.

Exceptions!

The verb can come after ni...ni when the elements are the subject. Example: Neither the rug nor the table are modern.
We use ne...que to replace seulement (idea of limitation). Example: I only buy a chest of drawers → I only buy a chest of drawers.
