The future perfect: formation

Le futur antérieur : formation

Le futur antérieur est un temps composé utilisé pour exprimer une action qui aura lieu avant une seconde action.

(The future perfect is a compound tense used to express an action that will take place before a second action.)

What the futur antérieur expresses (and how to “feel” it)

Futur antérieur = an action that will be completed before another future moment.

  • English idea: “will have done” / “will have finished”.
  • French idea: you look at the future and say: by that time, it’s already done.
Time relationship Typical French connectors Meaning
Action A finished → then Action B dès que, quand, une fois que, après que “As soon as / once / when …, then …”
By a deadline in the future avant, d’ici, pour + time “by noon / by next week …”

Build it step by step (quick recipe)

  1. Choose the auxiliary: avoir or être.
  2. Put the auxiliary in the futur simple (aurai, auras… / serai, seras…).
  3. Add the participe passé of the main verb.

Formula: futur simple of avoir/être + participe passé

Type Pattern Example
Most verbs avoir + past participle J’aurai fini.
Movement / change of state + pronominal verbs être + past participle Je serai arrivé(e).

Avoir or être? Choose fast (B1-friendly rule)

  • Avoir: default choice (the majority of verbs).
  • Être:
    • movement / arrival / departure: aller, venir, arriver, partir, entrer, sortir…
    • change of state: naître, mourir, devenir…
    • pronominal verbs: se lever, se déplacer, s’installer…

Self-check: Can you say “I went/arrived/left” or “I became” or does the verb have se? → likely être.

Agreement: when the past participle changes form

  • With être, the past participle agrees with the subject:
Subject Example with arriver
She Elle sera arrivée.
They (all women) Elles seront arrivées.
We (mixed group / default) Nous serons arrivés.
  • With avoir, at this level you can usually keep it unchanged (agreement rules with direct objects can come later).

Word order: negation and common pitfalls

  • In the futur antérieur, the negation surrounds the auxiliary:

Correct: Je n’aurai pas fini avant midi.

Incorrect: Je n’aurai fini pas avant midi.

  • With être, keep the same structure:

Je ne serai pas arrivé(e) à temps.

Typical sentence patterns you will reuse in conversation

Pattern French model Natural English meaning
As soon as… (then…) Dès que nous aurons terminé, nous partirons. As soon as we have finished, we’ll leave.
Once I’ve arrived… Une fois que je serai arrivé(e), je vous appelle. Once I’ve arrived, I’ll call you.
By + deadline J’aurai envoyé le dossier avant 18 h. I’ll have sent the file by 6 p.m.

Special use: futur antérieur used “alone” (not a mistake)

Sometimes French uses the futur antérieur without a second future action.

  • It expresses that something will be already achieved at a future point (often in predictions).

Example: Dans quelques années, ces artistes se seront fait connaître grâce aux galeries.

Meaning: In a few years, these artists will have become known thanks to galleries.

Mini self-check before you move on

  1. Can I say it in English as “will have + past participle”?
  2. Did I pick the right auxiliary (avoir vs être)?
  3. If it’s être, did I add -e / -s / -es when needed?
  4. In a negative sentence, is ne… pas around the auxiliary?

If all answers are “yes”, your futur antérieur is ready for use.

  1. The future perfect is formed with the auxiliary "avoir" or "être" in the simple future + a past participle.
  2. The auxiliary "avoir" is used for the majority of verbs.
  3. The auxiliary "être" is used to indicate a change of place or state and for pronominal verbs.

Ils/Elles seront arrivé(e)s (They will have arrived)Ils/Elles auront fini (They will have finished)Ils/Elles auront pris (They will have taken)

Exceptions!

  1. The future perfect can be used on its own to express an action that will have been completed by that time. Example: Dans quelques années, les artistes se seront fait connaître grâce aux galeries d’art contemporaines.
  2. Be careful to respect the word order in the negative sentence. Example: Je n'aurai pas fini la visite avant midi.

1.
Auxiliary error: “arriver” requires the auxiliary être, not avoir; we must say “nous serons arrivés”.
2.
Word order error: “pas” must follow the auxiliary (ne… pas aurai) and not the past participle; we say “je n’aurai pas fini”.
