The neuter demonstrative pronouns ceci, cela, ça
Ceci, Cela, Ça are neuter demonstrative pronouns that refer to a thing or an idea. They replace a group of words or a sentence.
- We use ceci to refer to what is close. We use cela or ça for what is farther away.
- We use “ça” to replace “le”, “la”, “les” when they express a general idea, and sometimes in certain cases of double pronominalization to make the sentence lighter.
- We sometimes use “ça” to reinforce an interrogative pronoun.
- We use ce or c' to replace ça before the verb être.

Exceptions!
- Ça is more informal, often used in speech. Example: Pourvu que ça soit vrai !
- "Ce" is more formal and more common in writing. Example: Pourvu que ce soit vrai ! There is, however, only one possibility for « Ce fut »
- Before devoir/pouvoir + être: Ça / ce doit être passionnant ; Ça/ ce ne peut pas être Paul qui a bu toute la bouteille.
