Comparisons: even ... als, hoe ... hoe

Vergelijkingen: even ... als, hoe ... hoe

Gebruik even ... als en net zo ... als voor gelijke vergelijking, en hoe ... hoe om aan te geven dat twee dingen met elkaar samenhangen.

(Use even ... als and net zo ... als to make equal comparisons, and hoe ... hoe to show that two things are connected.)

Equal comparisons: choosing the right structure

  • even … als = equal quantity (numbers, time, money, amount).
  • net zo … als = equal quality (adjectives/adverbs: fast, clear, professional).
  • Hoe + comparative …, hoe + comparative … = “the …, the …” (one change influences the other).

1) even … als: equal quantity (how much / how many)

  • Pattern: evenveel + noun + als …
  • Meaning: “as much / as many … as”.

Ik heb even veel vergaderingen als mijn manager.

evenveel is usually one word.

Zij krijgt evenveel budget als wij.

Zij krijgt net zo budget als wij.

net zo is for qualities, not amounts.

Quick self-check: Can you answer “How much / how many?” → choose evenveel … als.

2) net zo … als: equal quality (how + adjective/adverb)

  • Pattern: net zo + adjective/adverb + als …
  • Meaning: “just as … as”.

Mijn collega is even kritisch als onze leidinggevende.

For equality with an adjective, Dutch prefers net zo.

Je legt het net zo duidelijk uit als zij.

Je legt het evenveel duidelijk uit als zij.

evenveel cannot go with an adjective like duidelijk.

Quick self-check: Is there an adjective/adverb (e.g. snel, duidelijk, professioneel)? → choose net zo … als.

3) Hoe … hoe: “the …, the …” (linked changes)

  • Pattern: Hoe + comparative + clause, hoe + comparative + clause.
  • You are not comparing two people/things, but two changes.
  • Often used in professional talk (results, performance, behaviour).

After hoe you need a comparative: duidelijker, not duidelijk.

hoe comes directly before the comparative: hoe meer, hoe minder.

Quick self-check: Can you translate it as “the more…, the less…” or “the clearer…, the faster…”? → choose Hoe … hoe.

Mini checklist before you answer

  1. Quantity? (time, money, number) → evenveel … als
  2. Quality? (adjective/adverb) → net zo … als
  3. Two linked changes? (“the …, the …”) → Hoe + comparative…, hoe + comparative…
  4. After hoe, always use a comparative (beter, meer, minder, duidelijker).
