Het Douane Laboratorium onderzoekt producten om te bepalen waaruit ze bestaan; dat is het doel van het onderzoek. Ze onderzoeken niet hele zendingen, maar altijd monsters: kleine stukjes of hoeveelheden van een product om de samenstelling te bepalen. Elk jaar verwerken medewerkers duizenden monsters.

Veiligheid staat voorop: er gelden strikte veiligheidsprocedures. Op het laboratorium dragen medewerkers een laboratoriumjas en een veiligheidsbril. Brandbare en gevaarlijke stoffen worden in speciale kasten bewaard en grote afzuigkappen houden de lucht schoon.

Medewerkers moeten heel nauwkeurig werken, omdat de uitslagen belangrijk zijn voor handel en wetgeving. Beide de planning en de kwaliteit van het onderzoek zijn daarom cruciaal.
