Nominaliseringen: als je van een werkwoord een zelfstandig naamwoord maakt door het lidwoord 'het' ervoor te zetten of een achtervoegsel -ing of -atie te gebruiken.

What nominalisation does (and why it’s used)

Nominalisation = you turn a verb into a noun.

You can talk about an action as a thing (a result, process, or concept).
It sounds more formal and often fits work contexts (HR, policy, reports).
You can build longer noun phrases: de controle van …, de ontwikkeling van …

Two common patterns you will see (B1)

2) Noun phrase with “van”	de/het + noun + van + details	De controle van de veiligheidsgordel is verplicht.

How to choose: verb sentence or nominalisation?

Choose the verb if you want the sentence to be direct and “alive”.
Choose the noun if you want a formal, neutral tone or you want to focus on the procedure/result.

Form cues: articles + fixed collocations

Nominalised words behave like nouns, so watch the signals:

They often need an article: de beslissing, de aanvraag, de controle, de ontwikkeling, het werken.
They often go with common “business” verbs:

Meaning check: process vs result

de beslissing = the decision (the result)
de controle = the inspection/check (the procedure)
de ontwikkeling = the development (the process)
het werken = working (the activity in general)

Tip: If you can replace it with “the decision / the inspection / the development” in English, a noun is likely correct.

Spelling patterns you can recognise (don’t overgeneralise)

Many nouns look different from the verb. You often learn them as a pair:

Rule of thumb: If you are unsure, check if an article fits (de/het). If yes, you are probably using a noun.

Common pitfalls (and quick fixes)

Don’t keep the verb after “een/de”.
~~Ik doe een aanvragen.~~ → Ik doe een aanvraag.
Avoid “English-style” forms.
~~de controlling~~ → de controle
Don’t overuse nominalisations.
Too many in one sentence sounds heavy. Mix noun forms with verbs.

Self-check: did you nominalise correctly?

Did I choose a noun (not a verb form)?
Did I add the correct article: de/het?
Do I need a support verb like nemen/doen/uitvoeren?
If there is extra information, did I connect it with van?
Does the sentence still feel natural (not too “heavy”)?

When you nominalise verbs, you can name the result of an action as a separate, independent concept.

Exceptions!

Nominalisation often makes sentences more formal and less direct.
When you nominalise many verbs one after another, the text becomes less smooth and less lively.
