What “nominalisation” does (why Dutch uses it)

Nominalisation means: you turn a verb (an action) into a noun (a “thing” / concept).

• Verb = the action: beslissen (to decide)
• Noun = the result / concept: de beslissing (the decision)

Dutch uses this a lot in professional contexts because it sounds more formal and focuses on process + responsibility, not on “who does what”.

The 2 most common patterns you need (B1)

Pattern 1: Use a fixed noun (de beslissing, de aanvraag, de controle, de ontwikkeling)

• beslissen → de beslissing → een beslissing nemen
• aanvragen → de aanvraag → een aanvraag doen / een aanvraag indienen
• controleren → de controle → de controle is verplicht
• ontwikkelen → de ontwikkeling → de ontwikkeling gaat snel

Pay attention: the verb often becomes a noun with a different ending (not a simple “-ing” like in English). You learn these as vocabulary pairs.

Pattern 2: Use the infinitive as a noun (het werken)

When you talk about an activity in general, Dutch often uses:

het + infinitive

• Het werken kost tijd. (Working takes time.)
• Het parkeren op het terrein is alleen toegestaan met een vergunning. (Parking on the premises is only allowed with a permit.)

Meaning difference:

• het werk = “the job / the work” (the tasks or employment)
• het werken = “working” as an activity/process

A quick choice guide: which nominalisation should I use?

1. Do you mean a concrete result/document?
   • Yes → use the fixed noun: de beslissing, de aanvraag, de controle, de ontwikkeling
   • No → go to step 2
2. Do you mean the activity in general?
   • Yes → use het + infinitive: het werken, het controleren (less common), het parkeren

  • Ik doe een aanvragen. → Ik doe een aanvraag.
• Don’t guess the noun ending

• Choose “het werken” vs “het werk” carefully
  • Het werken kost tijd. (activity)

• Did I use een + a real noun (beslissing/aanvraag)?
