What these double connectors do

These are fixed pairs that help you structure ideas clearly in Dutch.

  • Contrast (two sides): enerzijds … anderzijds / aan de ene kant … aan de andere kant
  • Addition (two positives): zowel … als / niet alleen … maar ook
  • Timeline (development): eerst … uiteindelijk (or eerst … eindelijk)

Choose the right pair (fast decision)

How to place them in a sentence (word order you can trust)

  • Put the first part early in the clause.
  • Put the second part at the start of the next clause (or later in the same sentence).
  • Inversion rule: if the connector comes first, the verb often comes before the subject (like other adverbs).

Common mistakes (and how to fix them)

  • Don’t mix two different contrast pairs in one sentence.

Enerzijds wil ik netwerken, maar aan de andere kant moet ik presenteren.

Correct: Enerzijds wil ik netwerken, anderzijds moet ik presenteren.

Or: Aan de ene kant wil ik netwerken, aan de andere kant moet ik presenteren.

  • Complete the pair (especially with niet alleen).

Niet alleen de keynote was sterk, ook de workshop.

Correct: Niet alleen de keynote was sterk, maar ook de workshop.

  • Keep parallel structure: what comes after each part should be comparable.

Zowel de locatie als het was goed georganiseerd.

Correct: Zowel de locatie als het programma was goed georganiseerd.

Eindelijk vs. uiteindelijk (the nuance)

  • uiteindelijk = neutral “in the end / eventually” (most common and safest choice).
  • eindelijk = more time-focused and emotional: “finally (at last!)”. It can sound a bit old-fashioned in some contexts.
Meaning Example
Neutral outcome Na een paar aanpassingen werkte het uiteindelijk.
Relief / impatience Na drie weken kregen we eindelijk goedkeuring.

Self-check before you speak or write

  1. Am I doing contrast, addition, or a timeline?
  2. Did I use a matching pair (and not mix patterns)?
  3. Is the structure after both parts parallel (two nouns / two clauses / two adjectives)?
  4. If the connector starts the sentence: did I keep verb in 2nd position?

Goal: sound structured, professional, and easy to follow in meetings and discussions.

niet alleen ... maar ookZe heeft niet alleen kennis gemaakt met de spreker, maar ook met veel andere deelnemers. (She got to know not only the speaker, but also many other participants.)

Exceptions!

  1. The use of eindelijk places more emphasis on time and is often considered outdated, while uiteindelijk is more neutral and less time-focused."
